Networking Extravaganza
Once a quarter, Kathy invites a select group of her very large network to a cocktail party held at Chapin Hill Advisors New York City offices. The group of attendees varies each time and new people are always being added. Generally, the attendees include a diverse mix of professionals, family office members and business owners and provide a forum in which to connect with one another.

Chapin Hill provides nametags with an ice-breaker to encourage conversation and attendance is limited to two professionals in any category. The food is prepared by Chapin Hill's President, Kathy Boyle at her home and brought in and passed by a team of fabulous servers. The selection is varied and always vegetarian and is greatly appreciated by all, in fact; the selection of appetizers is generally a talking point and recipes are frequently requested.

A not for profit organization is supported each time with a request for a voluntary donation by each attendee to reserve their spot. The not for profit is encouraged to have board members attend to circulate and meet everyone and spread the word about their mission. The Networking Extravaganza is an invitation-only event.

Breakfast Clubs
Kathy lives in Bedford, NY a bucolic town with a number of small villages nearby. As Kathy loves to sit down with people and get to know them, she was disappointed to find out there were no wonderful places to have breakfast in the Bedford area. So she set about hosting breakfast to bring together local business owners and professionals.

Started in 2006 with 13 attendees, the Bedford Breakfast Club now has 250 members and counting! Once a month from September through June, Chapin Hill hosts a breakfast meeting in a retail store for 35-55 of the Breakfast Club members. This brings visibility to the local host, allows everyone to meet the owner and find out more about the business as well as to provide an intimate setting for networking.

Kathy is a gourmet cook and a vegetarian so she personally cooks breakfast and brings it to the stores. Food is communal and the offerings provide talking points and a way to build relationships. Kathy also likes to spread the word that you do not have to kill animals to have a fabulous meal.

In addition to a list that is always adding new people and selecting attendees so there are few conflicts, a variety of business owners and professionals to meet, Chapin Hill provides nametags for each attendees with clever "ice-breakers" to encourage conversation. The Breakfast Club is an invitation-only event.

A local not for profit organization is highlighted at each Breakfast Club. Board members and senior staff are welcomed to mingle with the attendees. A very short introduction on the organization's mission is presented and a basket is passed to raise a little financial support for the organization.

The Breakfast Clubs have been so successful that Chapin Hill Advisors started a Greenwich Breakfast Club in March 2012 and is hosting these events quarterly.

Pet Trust Workshops
When people initially hear about pet trusts, they often reference Leona Helmsley leaving $100 million to her dog. That is an unfortunate scenario as pet trusts should play an essential role in the estate plan of any animal owner.

In 2011, animal shelters saw a 35% increase in companion animals turned in as the poor economy and the death of owners meant the pets lost their homes. County and city owned shelters have euthanization rates often as high as 75%. Also in 2011, 170,000 horses were sent to slaughter, an end no horse lover would want for their horse, whether a backyard pet or a professional competitor.

Horses can live well in to their 30's and even 40's so a 15 year-old horse could have a 20 year life expectancy. Horses are expensive to maintain whether a pleasure horse, polo pony or show horse. Exotics such as parrots, tortoises and monkeys and chimpanzees also have long life expectancies and special needs for care and feeding.

Chapin Hill Advisors conducts workshops for pet owners to provide education about pet trusts. Most events have a panel of experts including trust and estate attorneys, veterinarians and animal conflict mediators to address the range of issues to be considered.

Chapin HillÕs role is to help the pet-owner think through the issues, both soft and hard to decide how they wish to provide for their petÕs care and how much is required to provide adequate care for your treasured pets as well as how to fund the trust.

Our workshops are limited in attendance to provide an intimate environment so guests may openly discuss these issues. The locations for the events are very exclusive such as prestigious art galleries, fabulous homes or barns or celebrity residences. An animal charity is supported and attendees are asked to make a donation to attend.

To be included on our pet trust workshop invitation list, please email Kathy Boyle¨ at kboyle@chapinhill.com

Succession Planning
Closely-held businesses present the business owner(s) with a unique set of challenges. What is their business worth? What would it sell for and who might buy it? If family members are active in the business, should they continue to work in the business post-sale? Do I have a good "bench" for the business to thrive in my absence?

Chapin Hill Advisors hosts workshops for the family and closely-held business owner to address these issues and educate the business owner and their partners. Failure to plan can be very costly to the owner's family in the event of a death of the founder(s). A business without a well-planned succession can be sold at steep discounts. The sale of the business may also generate a large amount of estate and possibly income tax. The worst case is a double whammy Ð a discounted sale and steep estate taxes.

A well-planned succession strategy can help the business owner(s) mitigate some of these issues as well as create a roadmap for financial success post-sale. Will the present market environment allow the owner to fully replace the income stream from their successful business? Do family members need to seek out other employment? How much control should the founder/CEO give up to maximize tax strategies?

Chapin Hill Advisors brings together a team of experts to address the many issues facing the owners of successful mid-sized businesses. The panel may consist of a combination of a business valuation specialist, trust and estate attorney, a tax specialist, mergers and acquisition specialist and attorneys as well as others. The event always allows times for questions and answers from the audience and cocktails afterwards to provide more access to the specialists.

To receive an invitation for one of our Succession Planning events or to discuss your own succession plan, please contact President, Kathy Boyle¨ at kboyle@chapinhill.com
